artist statement: By describing a specific motif or exploring a theme, I am trying to find the dominant characteristics as well as the 'identity' of a body of work. The vocabulary of shapes and images I've used over the years re-appear in more recent works and reflect patterns that I can never completely discard. Sometimes I explore atmosphere and color sometimes line and composition only. Other times I might explore symbol systems or marks that are expressive and dense. Either way my goal is not to focus on one particular aspect of formalism in a body of work, but to let the natural development of the piece describe the interplay between all modes.
