Kevin Bourgeois has worked as a self taught contemporary artist for over ten years using all available means to educate and expand his art vocabulary. Starting in the eighties with encouragement while in high school, Kevin began exposing himself to many forms of art. During that time he organized his own displays at small businesses or events as well as entering competitions and art festivals. In 1991, Kevin held his first exhibitions in a gallery. During the nineties, he continued exhibiting in galleries, museums, and juried shows. In 2001, he enrolled in computer arts and art history classes at Rollins College to further his learning. This gave Kevin the chance to become an art editor for an annual Rollins publication for art. As he had no plans to seek a full degree and had firmly established himself as an artist in Florida, he moved to New York to work and grow as a contemporary artist. He lost no time making his way in the New York art world appearing in group and solo exhibitions at Causey Contemporary, Dietch Projects, Headquarters and The Culture Project as well as at the Fountain Art Fair, The Bridge Art fairs New York and Miami, the Shore Institute of Contemporary Art in New Jersey, and Collectors Contemporary in Singapore. Additionally he and his drawings have been featured in the pages of Juxtapose Magazine, Vapors Magazine, Ninja Magazine, Asian Art News, TimeOut Singapore, Artinfo, The Village Voice, Lucid Culture, Swindle Magazine and Wallspankers ( online).
Kevin’s drawings combine traditional graphite techniques with strong pop imagery to make his own socio-political statements. Most often he comments on human interactions and/or how those relationships then interact with technology. The drawings are occasionally combined with found objects to startling effect. His “synthesis” drawing, created for the DRAW exhibition is no exception. It is a composite of his realistic graphite drawing and a copper computer disc that does double duty as the drawings frame.
“Synthesis” will appear with the DRAW exhibition at the Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City June - July 2010. DRAW is a must-see exhibition featuring original drawings by over 300 artists in the skateboard, music, urban, tattoo, literature, design, illustration, animation, psychedelic and new contemporary art worlds. The show is a tribute to the often underrated but fundamental building block of visual and graphic art: the drawing.
DRAW is the largest contemporary drawing exhibition to emerge from New York City. Most recently the exhibition drew over 2000 visitors to its London, England debut at Stolen Space. The show originated in 2006 at New York City’s Fuse Gallery to phenomenal responses from the public and press alike. It then moved to Gallery Lombardi in Austin Texas in March 2007 where it appeared during the SXSW Music and Interactive Film Festival before moving on England. From London DRAW moved to the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Next is Mexico. Future shows in this six country tour are scheduled for Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Berlin.
Artists whose works appear in DRAW include: Alex Grey, HR Giger, Clive Barker, Richard Serra, David Byrne, Gibby Hayes of the Butthole Surfers, Ron English, skate legend Mark Gonzales, and many others.
